While electric vehicles are no doubt the future of the transportation industry, there are still a lot many things that need to be worked out before they can be rolled out in a full-fledged manner. One such big issue is the limited range on account of batteries running out of charge. Besides, it’s time consuming to recharge the batteries. To overcome the problem, ABB has unveiled a new model for a charger in this year’s Hannover Messe. ABB claimed the charger called Terra High Power is 350 kW fast charger.
A magazine on photovoltaics informed that the new charger can charge an electric vehicle in eight minutes and can add a range of almost 200 km.
It Has High Potential to Oust Fossil-fuel Powered Vehicles
To supplant fossil-fuel powered vehicles which can be refueled in just a few minutes, such superfast charging of batteries is necessary. The super high current in the charger can charge both 400V and 800V cars at full power. It is best suited for rest stops on highway and petrol stations.
As of now, although there are numerous carmakers touting fast charging for their electric cars, there are, unfortunately, not too many fast charging stations. Once those become widespread – found in every nook and cranny – the electric car revolution will start.
As per a statement by ABB’s team who helped build the charger, once it is installed on roads worldwide, it would come in pairs to enable two electric vehicles to be charged at full power at the same time.
